Emma Lopez Orena was born April 25, 1922 in Old Hardin, Texas and passed away at the age of 95 on Mother's Day night 2017. She grew up in Beaumont, TX and graduated from Beaumont High School in 1939. She moved to Port Arthur, TX upon her marriage to George Orena in 1940 and was married to him for 72 years before his death in 2012. She was preceded in death by four siblings - Rosendo Lopez, Mike Lopez, Lucy Granado and Elvira Krummel.

Emma, affectionately known as "Emmie" to her friends and grandchildren was very active in church affairs and community activities. She was a homemaker during the time her husband was in Germany during WWII. After her children started school she entered into sales, first working in a grocery store, drug store and finally at JC Penney where she retired as the catalog supervisor. After retiring, she became a volunteer in the local hospital. She taught a continuing education course on Mexican cooking at Lamar College in Beaumont. She was well known for her tamales which she cooked only at Christmas (too much work). Several of her recipes are included in the Crandall Central Baptist cookbook.

Emma ministered in Spanish speaking churches in Port Arthur and Beaumont for over 50 years mainly working with primary age children. In 2000 Emma and George moved to Crandall, TX where they continued their work in the Spanish speaking mission of Crandall Central Baptist for several years. Emma also volunteered in the CISD middle school ESL At-Risk program working with Spanish speaking students.

Emma remained active and maintained her house and flower beds until the age of 94. Her beloved Yorkie, Pepe, was her companion for 14 years.

She is survived by her children George Orena, Jr. and Helen Girouard, both of Crandall, her grandchildren Tres Orena of Australia, Tanya Orena Marek of Spring, Mark and Bryan Girouard of Crandall, Lisa Virgoe and Joanna Hester of Allen, her great-grandchildren Cameron Morris, Cassie, Gabbi and Zack Girouard, Laredo, Rio, Austin Virgoe, and great-great grandchildren Grayson Ballard and Eliana Hester. Surviving siblings include Frances Vogel, Connie delaRosa and Jesse Lopez.

Services will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home in Seagoville, TX on Saturday May 20 at 2 pm. Visitation will be Friday, May 19, from 6-8 pm.
